Matrix Providers is hiring an Optometry Technician to join our team of talented professionals who provide healthcare services to our Military Service Members and their families at Walter Reed in Bethesda, MD

Employment Status: Full-time
Compensation: $21 -$25/hr
Schedule: Shifts shall be 8.5 hours in length with 30 minutes for lunch, not to exceed 40 per week. Shift hours are typically 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.

Degree/Education: Certificate; Complete an optometric technician course or two years of experience an Optometric Technician/Technologist
• Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: Must maintain BLS Certification
• Experience: One year of experience as an Optometric Technician/Technologist after graduation.
• Board Certification: Possess and maintain current certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Optometry or completed a formal optometric training program of the United Stated Armed Forces

Job Summary:

  • Provide a wide variety of duties to assist the optometrist/ophthalmologist as appropriate to the level of certification.
  • Conducts initial interviews with patients to gather medical history, eye history and information on visual complaints, past eye injuries, and family histories of eye disease. Reviews medical records for additional history required for the vision evaluations.
  • Assists in the preliminary examination of patients prior to their evaluation by the Optometrist by performing a variety of screening and technical procedures such as unaided and corrected visual acuity and visual skills, muscle balance, color
  • vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, accommodative ability, neutralizing spectacle and/or contact lenses, auto refraction and auto keratometry.
  • Receives and orients patient. Sets up equipment to conduct diagnostic tests. Tests and techniques include: color vision testing using the PIP color plates and red/green lens; phoria testing using phoropter and cover testing; intraocular pressure testing using noncontact and application tonometry, to include the Goldmann tonometer and the Tonopen; depth perception testing using stereoscopic and stereo fly testing apparatus; screening and threshold visual field testing using the Humphrey Visual Field tester; accommodation testing; tests for diplopia using red lens and Worth Four Dot testing apparatus; obtains keratometer readings; and performs photography using an anterior segment or retinal camera.
  • Recognizes the effects of drug and solutions pertaining to the eye and eye prosthetics. Instills medications in the form of eye drops or ointments as ordered by the optometrist.
  • Orders, dispenses, and repairs spectacles. Assist patients in their selection of spectacle frames by selecting proper frame size to include (eye, bridge, and temple length. Determines style and color of frame followed by accurate bifocal and trifocal segment; heights, and measures interpupillary distance).
  • Prepares and sends order forms for fabrication of spectacles to the optical fabrication lab utilizing the Spectacle Transmission System for manufacture and upon delivery verifies the accuracy of each job via a visual inspection and the use of lensometry.
  • Tracks spectacle orders. Enters all military spectacle orders information into the computer and transmits to the military lab daily. Maintains and tracks spectacle order accountability via computer for military spectacles and ensures timely distribution of all spectacles received by the optometry clinic via US Postal Service or telephonic notification.
  • Performs procedures necessary to fit and adjust frames, shapes spectacle frames to fit the contours of the patients face and head. Performs required minor repairs to eye wear and replaces spectacle parts as needed. Assists patients in lens and frame selection for safety glasses.
  • Instruct patients concerning eye care and contact lens handling.
