Job Title: Echo Tech / Cardiac Sonographer
Job Summary: The Echo Tech, also known as a Cardiac Sonographer, is responsible for performing echocardiograms (ultrasound imaging of the heart) to assist healthcare providers in diagnosing and treating heart conditions. This role requires a high level of technical expertise in operating ultrasound equipment, as well as a solid understanding of cardiac anatomy and physiology. The Echo Tech works closely with cardiologists, physicians, and other healthcare staff to provide accurate imaging and ensure the best possible care for patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform non-invasive cardiac ultrasound exams, including transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms (TTE and TEE), to obtain high-quality images of the heart.
- Position patients correctly and explain procedures to ensure patient comfort and cooperation during exams.
- Assess patient history and collaborate with physicians to tailor the echocardiogram to the patient’s specific medical condition.
- Operate ultrasound equipment to capture clear and accurate images of the heart’s structures, including chambers, valves, and blood vessels.
- Ensure proper documentation and interpretation of ultrasound images to aid cardiologists in diagnosing heart conditions, such as valve disease, heart failure, and congenital heart defects.
- Provide preliminary image analysis to assist physicians in interpreting results, ensuring the timely availability of information for clinical decision-making.
- Monitor patients during the procedure, ensuring safety and comfort, and handle any emergencies that may arise.
- Ensure equipment is functioning properly by performing routine checks, troubleshooting, and coordinating necessary maintenance.
- Adhere to infection control protocols, maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
- Maintain accurate patient records, including imaging results, notes, and any other relevant medical information.
- Stay current with developments in echocardiography technology and techniques, ensuring the highest standards of care.
- Work closely with the healthcare team to coordinate patient care and communicate imaging findings.
Qualifications:
- Certification in Cardiac Ultrasound or Echocardiography, typically through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), is required.
- Associate's degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Cardiovascular Technology, or related field; Bachelor’s degree is a plus.
- Previous experience in performing echocardiograms or working as a cardiac sonographer preferred.
- Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients and medical professionals.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a healthcare team.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be required.
- Ability to work with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
Working Conditions:
- The Echo Tech typically works in a hospital, clinic, or diagnostic imaging center setting.
- The position may require standing for extended periods, moving patients, and working with ultrasound equipment in various positions.
- Regular shifts, including evenings, weekends, or on-call duties, may be required depending on the facility's hours of operation.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to assist in lifting or moving patients who may require assistance.
- Stamina to stand or walk for extended periods of time.
- Visual acuity and manual dexterity for handling ultrasound equipment and obtaining high-quality images.
